Raised by Egyptian parents, I grew up in the Middle East on the island of Bahrain. I’ve continuously drawn on a hybrid contemporary culture, in which I have moved from the Middle East to study abroad in Canada. Traveling between Canada, Egypt and Bahrain made me feel akin to both traditional and Western tendencies. I spent five years at Concordia University in Montreal, and was also fortunate in partaking in an art exchange course in Italy in 2007. In December 2009, I successfully received my BA degree in Fine Arts, alongside a Major in Painting and Drawing. My work surrounds a post-modern approach by placing my subjects within an intensely colored and intricately ornamented surface. Combining popular culture and high art, I apply an unusually wide range of sources from art of the past and urban society. Graphic illustrations and graffiti are a few urban inspirations that I incorporate into the traditional form and production of art.
